John,

I play a St. Petersburg model 201 n BB tuba. For me, it has a rich dark sound that blows freely in all registers. You can purchase this tuba from the Tuba Exchange at about 3,000 U.S 1-800-869-TUBA. The valves are tricky to maintain as are rotary tubas in general. Its been good for me as an all around horn. I know you mentioned rotary valves, but there is a great BB tuba with pistons that deserves consideration: the Holton 331 Harvey Phillips model. This tuba runs about 4,395 U.S. I had a chance to blow on this horn for several days at ITEC 2000. You can buy this horn from Woodwind and Brasswind. 1-800-348-5003 ask to speak to Jack Saltzman. He loaned me this tuba all week at ITEC to play in the LOW BLOWERS. Keep in mind that there are many many other quality horns out there.
