I have a friend who graduated from my school as a Bio-Chem major. He looked at someone's lip balm and said that it was horrible. The ingredients that he said were bad were Camphor, Menthol, and Phenol. Those ingredients will numb your lips and make the chapped feeling go away, but they evaporate and make your lips drier than they were before. As they evaporate they make your lips feel all tingly so you think, "wow, this stuff is really working!"
He said that the very best thing to use to moisten your lips is beeswax.
