In college, we used to call Carmex "Magic Double Pedal C Cream", and used it all the time. After a while, however, I found that my lips felt dried out after it wore off, and they became somewhat "addicted" to the stuff.
After a Saturday spent blowing my brains out at a football game, I'd cake my face with Carmex before going to bed and would feel just fine when I woke up in the morning. The rest of the time, I used Vaseline Lip Therapy and suffered no ill side effects. This was at the suggestion of some of the pros here in town.
I don't know who told you about the petroleum-based products being bad, but you might want to take what they said with a grain of "your actual mileage may vary". I've been using VLT for years now, and find that it works just great.
