Actually if Rick is who I think it is, he is quite an incredible player.
He owns a new Conn and makes it sound like a huge 5/4 horn. As for the comment
about the St. Petersburg, I think if you read it you'll find quite a bit of
sarcasm in that statement and realize that he wasn't supporting the St.Pete
at all he was bashing it.
As for a comparison, the conn plays better than most of the MW's I've
played (I won't say all, because there's always a gem in the bunch). I think
the sound is much more live and has more character than a 2155 and is still
able to carry through the hall with a big gorgeous sound. As for the 2145,
I've always loved this horn, ever since I played Chris Olka's back in the day.
However, I believe the Conn feels bigger and sounds bigger despite the bore
size or valve size. (size isn't everything).
My last point is, David Fedderly is a great person to deal with. Shipping
for my 52J was around $30 on Amtrak. That is an incredible deal to try a horn.
So those of you in CA order one and you all get together one weekend and give
it a blow. AFTER THAT, give us all an update on what you think of the horn
