Yes, indeed, the 4th valve was an option, as the link below illustrates. But the 4th valve was a rather expensive (for the time) option.

As an owner of one of these monsters (1920 front-action with 3 valves), my feeling is that the sound resembles a CC more than what I think of as an Eb sound. Intonation is not wonderful, but the sound is very large for an "eefer".
