Combine teaching with performance and the outlook is much more cheery, and at least to my mind, more stimulating. Are you in college now? If you are and are just starting on a music degree, try to postpone the "performance vs. education" question until after you have gone through your sophmore year. (You can usually do this by declaring a music education major, and taking your lessons on a Performance major level (higher credit lessons), that way you won't be behind if you switch to straight performance.) I just can't tell you how many students I've seen who were adamant about not teaching, only to find themselves in two years being adamant about not wanting to perform for a living, and being in love with teaching. Amazing how it works...
Just a few thoughts...
