Not sure I am understanding your question. Is the prepared piece a selected etude for all players, or is this an individual selection. In case of an etude for all participants, play the ink. It is the framework from which you are to demonstrate your musical abilities. If this is a piece of your own choosing, then take the liberties (and the chances) as you and your teacher see fit. This is not a contest for making "your own music" (that would be the jazz improv score which is likely not a part of all state). It is about what you can do musically with what is on the page.
