Joe Novotny was the Principal Tuba with the Phil from 1961-1980. prior to that he played at Radio City and subbed with the Met. Mr. Novotny had a glorious sound and was reknowned for his clarity and focus. I may be partial, but I grew up on a steady diet of NY Phil. I studied with Kevin Ladd who studied with Mr. Novotny. He always spoke VERY highly of his abilities. Listening to some of the older Philharmonic recordings backs this praise up. His clarity of sound was second to none.
