The premier is described in the latest issue of the TUBA journal. Thanks to a heads-up from this BBS I was able to record it from an internet broadcast on Nov. 12. The sound quality was less than perfect, but it gave the general idea. The concerto was composed with a big CC tuba in mind, rather than Eb or F as is the case with many other works. It does make use of Gene's rich low register very effectively, but also has some screaming high notes and is a very long and challenging work with tremendous dynamic contrasts, which make it difficult to do justice to in an internet broadcast. It's not what I would call richly melodic.
