If you're smart, you'll contact Walter (one of my students) directly and ask him some questions about what steps he took when buying his tuba. Walter was very thorough, did his homework, went and played horns side by side, and then picked the one he thought best matched his playing. Now Walter has a horn he sounds much better on, and he has confidence that he made the right decision. I'm sure his advice could work for you too. Also, Mike Russo at the Brasswind (another of my students) has proven himself so far to be a true tuba specialist. That is to say, he isn't simply interested in selling you a horn and ushering you out the door like a typical salesman. Mike has treated a couple of my students extremely well, making sure they got the right tuba for them rather than trying to unload overstocked inventory. I'm sure there are others out there who will treat you fairly but I know first hand that it is happening with Mike at Brasswind. As Leland said, take the time to be sure you are making the right purchase when you're spending that kind of money. Good hunting!
