I am nortorious for hacking away at tubas. But I agree that this one should be preserved. However, it might be possible to make a different slide for the 4th valve that would add the extra bit of tubing required(only about 12") and still preserve the horn as it is not touching the original slide. It was not uncommon to see CCs of this vintage with the 2-3 length 4th valve. I knew another of Sammy's students with a Sander that was configured that same way.
