If anything, I would think that it might be the other way around. Since many people agree that it's more difficult to slur real smoothly and easily on rotary valves (something that I've certainly noticed), then one might want to compensate by using a funnel type m.p. Since piston valves often times give less trouble in making smooth slurs, one could more easily get away with using a bowl shaped m.p., or a shallow m.p. of some sort.

Anyway, I agree more with your last sentence - one should use whatever works for them. I just wanted to know the rational behind the m.p./valve-type thinking was.
