An almost 20 years old Besson/B&H has 4 older brasses illustrated. One of them a 3-valve Eb Bombardon in Eb. That is what we call an Eb tuba today.

What makes it interesting in this context, is the engraving, that says:

Adolphe Sax, Paris, 1846

What catches my eyes is the obvious German influence:

The Berliner Pumpen of Wieprechts design. They may have had their technical flaws, but they look like they allowed for less sharp angles of the airpath.

The bell contour with a relatively voluminous stack and throat plus very little end flaring nowadays is mostly found on some German rotary valved tubas, that can be traced down to original Cerveny designs.

And then there also is an illustration (not given here) of a 4-valve Eb Alto Saxhorn by Gautrot ainé (around1845) that displays very modern features even by todays standards: straight-through pistons and a bell contour almost identical of a Sovereign Eb alto horn (tenor horn for the Brits).
