When I was in high school I had a King BBb from the 1930s with three front-action valves and tuning slide in the leadpipe. The tubing was arranged so that I could easily manipulate the 2nd and 3rd valve slides with my left hand. It didn't take much work to clean them up so that they moved very freely. I could pull both parts of the double slide with my pinky, and the 2nd slide with thumb and forefinger. It felt so natural that I believed the horn was designed with that in mind. When the kings were redesigned in the 1950s, putting the tuning slide downstream from the valves, that feature was lost.
