A band director friend of mine I talked to tonight at a school open house recommended a Bach 18 or a 24AW.
There are some wonderful opinions on this question among the good folks on the BBS!
I have a somewhat nondescript Herco mpc with a fairly deep bowl but probably won't use it at all. I put it in a mild solution of household vinegar and water to clean it up a little from the corrosion of long years of nonuse and after about 24 hours I risned it out and put it in water to rinse out thoroughly. There are some bright brass-colored flecks in it. Wonder if I took the plating off in some places!
I also have a Conn Hellberg coming that I got on e**Y from a guy in an Army Field Band in Ft. Lewis, WA, but I don't know whether it's the 7b or the other one. We'll see.
Lots of fun, getting back after all these years.
Thanks to everyone for the comments and advice, which I will print out and mull over during the coming weekend.
Graham
