I agree with Steve. Two kilobucks will get you a used King 2341 in solid, playable condition. The 1241 (that they listed as a 2341) at Baltimore Brass would have been perfect, but unfortunately it has been sold (to my wife's uncle). I can think of no better 4/4, 4-valve BBb tuba for two grand, unless you get unusually lucky.

If you are willing to take a little bit of a risk, Baltimore Brass has a St. Petersburg that plays with a nice, dark sound and seems to be mechanically functional. I don't know what price they have on it, however (I forgot to look at the tag). You'll have to take care of it, because it's hard to work on and not rugged, but if you do, you'll probably get your money's worth.
