I've gotten tubas (and computer equipment) shipped that way too. Seems to work just fine--the foam is rigid enough to provide some support.
As far as getting rid of it, a half-cup of diesel and a lighted match works fine. Melts down into a little hard mass. Stay clear of the smoke--it's probably toxic.
The local air-pollution control police would have a fit if they knew I was doing this, but it gets the job done and is probably no worse for the environment than your typical 18-wheeler.
