Maybe having things well-packed is an art. I had my tuba shipped to Pittsburgh from Woodwind & Brasswind via UPS. It was in an extremely large box. The box was packed with injection molded styrene (I think) custom molded around the tuba. The tuba arrived in great shape, most probably due to the excellent packing on the part of WW&BW. I have kept the box and packing just in case I need to ship the tuba someplace.
At the same time, I also ordered a tuba case. The case arrived in a simlarly-sized box. The box was trashed! The case had minor dings and a slightly bent hinge (which I fixed). I wasn't going to return the case only because I knew I was going to eventually beat it up a lot more than UPS did.
Oh yeah, UPS left both HUGE boxes on my front porch while I was at work.
