I might have said that trombonists "preferred" dark tuba sounds. If I did, I should not have. Of course, trombonists all have different tastes. I'm not sure that most people, much less trombonists, even know for sure what their preferences are in shading of timbres of instruments... A few years ago, I played (1st tuba on) a subscription series that included "Zarathustra". I played the first rehearsal on a huge Holton CC. The bass trombonist commented about how much he liked the sound, but from my perspective it was a bad fit. For the second rehearsal, I showed up with my F tuba, and he commented on how much he liked the sound... so... ??

The "generalization" again is how "easy" or how "difficult" it is to recognize intonation with different timbres. Again, I think you and I agree here.
