I can't speak specifically for NC but it's got to be just about like any other bigger city. Look in the arts section of your paper and find out when the various community bands and orchestras are playing. Go to the concerts and then talk to the conductors afterwards. Is there a college close by? Visit the music department and take notes from the bulletin boards. Check out the local jazz groups, big bands, and dance bands. It's not usually that hard to find a playing gig. If all else fails get your own quartet together. Arrange to play for churches and malls and outdoor festivals. Hand out business cards. Pretty soon the phone will start to ring with paying jobs. It takes a little effort but it usually pays off.
