Your story sounds familiar! Don't let your first experience discourage you. Those of us who have not played professionaly (or at all) our entire lives just take a little longer to 'get up to speed'. The thing that has really helped me is to sit next to someone who is much better than I am. I've only been back playing for the last couple of years after over 30 years of not playing. I've had the opportunity to sit beside some very good tuba players who challenged me at every turn... all while helping me learn. It's been a very rewarding experience and I am glad to say that today, I am a better tuba player than I ever was. I can sightread most anything, but it usually takes several trips through to really get the feel for a new piece. Hang in there!
