Good point about playing in a jazz band. I did a lot of playing in jazz band on bass trombone in high school and college and am currently playing lead (aagh) in a community jazz band. It helps on many levels. Mainly it does help to develop a stronger sense of rhythm and it also helps a tuba player to learn how to play harmonic parts that aren't the root. However, I think what will help Allan the best at this stage of the game is just a lot of sightreading out of a lot of easier instructional books. Sightreading is tough because it is something you can only do once per piece. So it takes a lot of material to practice sightreading. When a person does reach a certain level of ability on one instrument, I do recommend doing something like tackling trombone in jazz band to help learn a new perspective on music.
