Or, you could do what I do and count phrases rather than actual measures... Generally a phrase is 8 bars, but obviously you'll rarely have a multiple of 8, and a lot of times there are extended or shortened phrases, so you get it as close to a multiple of 8 as possible then add however many measures are left. Works like a charm!
