You learn the most interesting things at SIAM conferences. Betcha didn't know that Strad's were built using a type of curve know as a "cardiod". To draw a cardiod, make a disk (say, out of scrap wood) and drill a small hole in it (NOT in the center!). Fit a drawing tool though the hole and roll the disk along a straight line. The curve traced depends on the radius of the disk, and the distance of the hole to the center of the disk.

The curve (and the construction technique) was well known to craftsmen of the time, but only Strad violin backs have profiles which are cardiods.
