I had the same experience in high school...I played on an ancient Besson euph that I bought for $150 from my general music teacher when I was about 11 years old (circa 1989). It was pretty banged up by the time I made it to high school, but nothing that affected my playing (good thing, since there was nowhere for me to take it for repairs anyway). There were other euphers who flat-out laughed at me at honors band auditions and the like, and then they wanted to chuck their perfect horns in the dumpster when I ended up first chair. After my second year of college,I finally talked my parents into buying me a new euph and made up the difference by an increase in student loans. Basically I had to work my butt off, but it was definitely worth it. There will always be people who get things handed to them, and that's fine I guess, but I'm glad I wasn't one of them.
