Probably the click was in the bearings of the valves and not in the S-linkages. Your repair dude probably swedged the bearings a little and refit the shafts.

This is suggested by the notion of pushing in the slide. That would force some lubricant into the bearings, which would quiet things down a bit for a while.

Get an oiler with a needle tip (I bought a useful one from Baltimore Brass), and oil the bearings frequently. That will help keep things quiet and also minimize wear. Use it on your linkage pins, too.
