This may be true in the professional ranks, but in the amateur ranks, string players hold themselves above the "band people." I mostly forgive them of that foible, however, because playing a string instrument even moderately well requires years of perseverance, without the early positive progress that we wind musicians enjoy.
But I wonder if the compliments you received were a rite of noblesse oblige, and the real attitude being reflected by the complaints when a big brass work is selected over one of the great works for strings. Of course, I don't move in those rarefied circles, so you tell me.
