I asked a similar question here a few weeks ago and got several encouraging replies. I flew from Hartford to Atlanta to Tampa this past weekend, (missing the Atlanta shutdown by minutes) with my favorite mouthpiece in my pocket. I had worried about it, but Doug Elliot said they would only object to sharp things, and he was sure I could play it in tune. At the inspection I just put it into the little plastic box that they provide, along with my keys and wallet and pocket change, and it went right through both on the way down and coming back. The inspectors cared more about my suspenders than the mouthpiece.
