Actually, he didn't use multiple tubas on many of his works. Jim was not the first-call tuba for John Williams until the 1990's. At that time he became William's first tuba and Tommy usually played second. But everything in the seventies and the eighties, that was Tommy Johnson. In fact, Tommy has a autographed copy of the tuba part to either Jaws II or Close Encounters that says something to the effect that he is the greatest tuba player in the world. I wouldn't put too much stock in that statement though, I heard that John Williams told the orchestra that did E.T. that they were the greatest musicians in the world, then changed the entire orchestra to players from the LA Phil for Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (the very next project he did). He likes to change things around alot. Don't you love this business?
