The sound seems to sound -- closer! (of course . . . .)
But, what your ear hears also depends on the room size and acoustics, how close you're sitting to the timpani, etc.
You'd have to do a side-by-side test to find out what you think -- this one's rather hard to put into words -- just like the famous "German F" sound we all know and love! ;-)
