The perception is quite different, but I suspect that reality is not.
The new shorter King BBb certainly sounds different to me than the old detachable upright bell model. However, in the past when I've played the old RECORDING model and turned the bell towards the ceiling (so I could hear the sound), that sound was about the same as the "new shorty" King sound to my ears.
