The comparison of college musicians to college athletes is not a good one. Yes, they both need time in college to develop their talents in order to determine their worth as musician/athlete. But, while athletes are doing this, they are also working towards a degree in another field. When (if) they finish their degree, they can either pursue a career as a professional athlete, or use their degree to find a job in another line of work. Unfortunately, musicians are working at their craft AND earning a degree in that same area. If the professional musician thing doesn't work out for them, they are left "high and dry".
