I agree with you for the most part. But I think that we've got to change the whole idea of what it means to major in music. Too many students major in music thinking that performing music is their only option after graduation. With other majors such as english, history, philosophy, economics, art history (this list could go on and on) students don't go into college thinking that they will only be able to work in a narrow list of jobs directly connected with their major. I know history majors who work on Wall Street, I know music majors who are doctors, lawyers, and many other professions. Employers often don't care what your major is, just that you've completed your bachelors degree.

Parents, students, and music faculty need to keep in mind that majoring in music should not limit a student to a career in performing music or even teaching music.
