Strong, sturdy, but very, very heavy. The case my National Guard Band has for my MW 25 weighs 105lbs empty. By airline regulations my horn in the anvil case should be shipped air cargo. I ran into some difficulty with returning from the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee a couple of years ago, even though Denver had accepted it earlier without any problems.
As far as carrying it onboard, it depends on the plane. The army bought a seat for my horn & gig bag this year, but a call to the airline revealed nothing that couldn't fit under the seat or in an overhead bin could go in the cabin of that particular plane. I ended up putting it in a fiber case (with an oversize baggage charge and lots of fragile stickers) and praying. Luckily no damage.
Bottom line.....call your airline!!!
