Was that the right way to go? I'm still playing 35 years later. You be the judge. My parents bought a new Meinl Weston model 30, CC without my ever playing a note on it. The reason for that horn? I was studying privately, on baritone, and that was the recommendation of the teacher.

There is a plethura of instruments available and just as many opinions. Let the teacher make some recommendations, know what your price range is, and start by using the shops listed here for actual pricing information. If you like the local music store, ask if they can get you a horn and for what price (new). They may or may not have used instruments in stock.
