All I can say is what I have experienced...
1. I have not been offered a kickback from the only music store that will travel the 100 miles to service my school. My rep does, however, sometimes throw in a reed, oil, grease, etc. when a kid buys something else. He saves the messed up mutes for my less affluent kids and often hands them a folio when they buy a lyre. I am therefore, very loyal to my music store.
2.The store sends me a calendar... every year.
