I think you're onto something. When I still had my big Cazzani-Rampone BBb with an 0.900 bore and most of the expansion in the last couple of feet of the bell (more cylindrical than most tubas), false tones were impossible. You could play the pedal BBBb, but the false tone Eb (or any other note in that vicinity) simply did not exist. It was quite strange to me, as those false tones (which some say are the true resonant frequency of the instrument) are part of my normal warmup.

Unfortunately (or Thank Heavens!) I no longer have the old monster, so I can't do more tests.
