That is as close as I have heard to an explination of the false tone. I know that the funamental is non-existent and is imagined by the harmonic series above it. The lips do buzz the harmonic, but the node and the anit-node collide in the same spot and cancel out the fundamental. This cancelllation is why the false tones feel different than the same notes with valves on them. I always like to practice the false tones to learn to center the notes better with the chops and then when the right fingering is used, it sounds like, to quote Joe S., "an atomic bass trombone". However, then sound can be manipulated back to civility, if so desired.
