I actually try to get my string bass students to attempt to learn tuba, and vice versa. In reality, if you are going to try to actually earn a living outside the military and full time orchestras, one needs to have a little diversity.

I take my buddy Joe in Memphis. His tuba skills would bury mine in a second. He also has enough electric bass skills to get jobs. He has nothing to apologize for in his electric playing skills, and he gets work. (I know running the shop is enough work)...

My upright and electric skills are above average, and my BBb tuba skills are good enough to get jobs. (Yes, teaching is a full time job as well)...

The point is if you want to work, be able to cover both positions, unless you are in a situation where you are just getting too many jobs.
