Since the advent of the Hammond electronic, pipeorgan builders have been bemoaning the death of real organs. Right now there are many fewer companies in business than say, the early 70's. Now, it seems, that the only thriving organ building is taking place in large concert halls and only a select few companies that are able to build these large instruments. The smaller firms are having a hard time finding work (just ONE of the reasons I left the industry) building new instruments of modest size and must therefore concentrate on rebuilding older instruments. Other reasons for the demise of the industry are the rising price of labor and materials PLUS church attendence continues to decline. Fewer pews filled means a smaller take in the collection plate and less money for new organs. I would say that there will always be churches that want to spend the extra money to buy a hand-made pipe organ because they recognize the superiority of true pipes. They simply can not be mimiced by a speaker. But, alas, fewer and fewer institutions can afford to buy them.
