Personal opinion: 5/4is better because the projection and range cover almost all situations. A 6/4 has a BIG sound, but to play with finesse in quieter settings (as opposed to Wagner or Mahler), is a bit of a strain. The down side is that when you are called upon to deafen your audience with the sheet power and majesty of a 6/4, the 5/4 then becomes a little bit of a stretch; but not much.

I really wish Connie Weldon (U of Miami)was still around. That lady had the chops to belt it out or play delicato on the biggest Alexanders and Marzans!! She would have been a great source of information to us all.
