Musicality, instrument quality, all these things aside, consider this:

Tubas are heavy. Especially old Besson or B&H BBb comp horns. Fiberglass sousaphones are still heavy but to a lesser extent. There is no way that running around for hours of rehearsal and performance with a large weight on one shoulder is good for your back, shoulder neck or knees.

With reference to the string bass thread below, marching is perhaps a gig we should surrender to the string bassist, a wheel on the end pin would make marching a piece of cake! (haha)
