I play a Mel rotary, and I find that if I try to play the low register with an exhale feeling (perhaps this is more open throat, higher air flowrate, but lower velocity), instead of a blowing feeling (more closed up, higher velocity, lower flowrate), I get better results. When I do this, I get a nice, big (powerful, actually) in-tune sound. The breathing is a bit different than with smaller horns, but with a little practice, I found that I can exhale forcefully enough to get the sound that I want in any register, any register that I can normally hit, that is. Also, it is (as always, I guess) very important to "hear" the note in your head before you play it. BTW, I agree with you about the nice high end on this horn.
