I will say that,indeed, there is a definite lack of control in some sections of our school's marching band due to the members' need to play LOUD. However, most of our marching time on the field is countered equally with time inside (still with sousaphones)that we use to improve our music in general. Since we are headed to the Grand Nationals in Indianapolis on the 14th, our band director is stressing that each member of our section improve playing-wise. However, there is something of a difference between sousaphones and the Conn 20Js that my school uses in concert. I have to agree that marching band is significantly different in attitude than concert band, but if you extend the time that you practice inside at school with further practice at home, then your sound will not suffer considerably, in my experience. Question-any comments on the woes of marching on Astroturf?
