Will you regret it? Very possibly. Is it your duty? No. If you don't have the commitment to say that you don't care what anybody else says, and you're going to do this no matter what other people think, then you probably don't belong there. Having said this, I will say that there have been lots of young people in your position, who love playing tuba, but also were pretty tight with Math, who have ended up feeding their families as engineers (like me), but continue to enjoy music performance on an amateur basis. I think this board has lots of contributors who considered this same thing and elected to study other areas and go for other careers. It's a matter of how you want to acheive your life goals.
