I used to put junk on my lips, but discovered that once the winter was over I was still using the junk - ADDICTED.
I know a few other addicts of lip junk - constantly smearing crap on their faces year-round.
This fall, my lips began to get dry and cracked. I ignored it, avoiding licking them, and avoided putting junk on them. After about four days, my lips healed and are fine. I assume they adapted to the dryness and began secreting more oils.
