As a Brit now living in the States, I am responding to the comments about British Tubists.
With regards the RPO tour Mahler 5 - when was this ? I heard them in 1997 with Gatti and
the tuba who was Chris McShane ( a very well regarded player in the UK )and the low brass
including & especially the tuba came across massively. It may have been a different tour
or even hall but that was a big section!! I also have recordings of Chris in his RPO days
and they sound big/CC sound ,even though he mostly used the EEb.Check out the Ashkenazy?
RPO Shostakovich series - Nos3&12,9&15,10 etc. Also I have others where they match the
American CC sound.Moviola 2 with John Barry is another.I actually think its a good thing
that we still have international variations and different sounds. There is too much
uniformity of sound now.Chris along with Owen Slade(former LPO) & Patrick Harrild were
considered the "big three" & probably still are , and would ,I think, be a match for
the top US players that I have heard.
Anyway just my thoughts....
