To reinforce one of your points, my new 2341 was a great playing horn, and clearly played better for me than the other 6 that I tried at the same time. Even so, the tuning slides were anything but smooth and the valves were noisy. Matt took it back into the shop and lapped and aligned the tuning slides and adjusted that valves such that it still played the same but the slides and valves worked smoother and more quietly. This type of final adjustment probably isn't done in the King factory because of the cost, but it is part of what is done by Rudolph-Meinl, Hirsbrunner, and others.
