Why: because it resulted in a quieter valve. I didn't have any problem with valve oil reaction or wear (as I said: 7 years of playing with the plastic guides).
Old isn't necessarily bad...I own a 1965 model synthesizer which I love; but I also don't mind fixing inherent problems or improving it (ie I've replaced some components in the synth with newer ones to make it more stable).
Old isn't necessarily better, either.
I
