I learned 4 finger method. I also teach 4 finger method. I amin a minority in the area, because most others teach 3 finger grouping. (1,2,and 3+4).

Some of the biggest concern is the strength of the 4th finger. If you are not blessed with a stong 4th finger, then your hand will pay for it in the long run. When you cross over into the upright field, then vibrato is an issue with the 4th finger.

a it is, I don't play sustained notes with 4th finger. If I get into a situation where the 4th finger would be used for a long sustained note, I will half shift to a different finger.
